Your feet are also exposed to the elements because there is little to shield them from the full force of the wind and rain as you ride your bike.

Feet also suffer because they are generally non-fleshy so there is little to keep them warm naturally and they are positioned at the extremities of your body’s circulation system. So, as soon as you get cold at your core, your feet are less likely to get a good boost of warming circulation.

Room to move

You might think that wearing a thicker pair of socks in your normal cycling shoes will help with cold feet but if your toes can’t move about they may well become numb in the cold. It’s important that feet can move about and around a little bit inside your cycling shoes.

Wool for warmth

Merino is a naturally warming fibre (think how sheep stay warm living outdoors) and many people find that merino wool socks, even a thinner pair, such as Endura BaaBaa socks work a treat. Other wool-based favourites for cyclists include the Kalf Winter socks and our colourful, top-rated FWE Coldharbour socks which are made from 50% of the winter wonder material.

Windproofing

Cycle shoes often have ventilation holes to help feet to breathe in warmer conditions. You can add Windstopper overshoes, such as Gore Bike Wear Universal Windstopper Overshoes, to your summer cycles shoes to keep the worst of the winter wind from your feet.

Such has been the appeal that India is enjoying an upsurge in bookings by travellers looking for an exotic, colourful and enchanting destination for a trip of a lifetime.

As a rule of thumb, the cities of northern India are vibrant and full of hustle and bustle, while the lush green hills and ruined medieval cities of southern India are altogether slower and less likely to overwhelm.

Factor in what time of year you plan to travel – October to March is the best time to visit.

With its dazzling breadth of experiences and deep spirituality, India never fails to delight the senses and uplift the soul.

The Golden Triangle

A popular tourist circuit in north-west India that connects the three cities of Deli, Agra and Jaipur.

You’ll find a mix of busy streets and architectural splendours and a tour of the Golden Triangle is a classic introduction of the diversity of this vast and varied country.

Delhi

Often seen as a transit hub to other destinations, you could spend a week in the capital city of India and not see it all. If you can embrace the chaos of life, it’s an exhilarating experience.

Soak in the cacophony of noise with roads covered in pedestrians, rickshaws, cows, monkeys and street vendors.

In Old Delhi, see the majestic Jama Masjid, the largest Islamic mosque in India, whose courtyard holds 25,000.

Jaipur

Popularly known as the Pink City because of the extraordinary Rajasthan architecture, Jaipur has always been a popular destination and even more so since being the setting for The Real Marigold Hotel.

Impressive sites include the Palace of the Winds and the magnificent Amer Fort, which is mainly made up of a royal palace and located 7 miles from Jaipur.

Get there early to avoid queues for elephant rides! Jaipur has plenty to offer but is not for the faint hearted – street sellers are among the most persistent in India!

Agra

Known for its monumental splendour, Agra completes the Golden Triangle. Its pull, of course, is the stunningly beautiful Taj Mahal, a marble mausoleum that really does live up to expectations.

Another extraordinary site is the stupendous Mughal fort and there are many other jewelled tombs and a medieval-like maze of ancient bazaars.

Motorised traffic is banned from the area surrounding the Taj Mahal and, if you are not on a tour, one of the best ways to reach the Taj Mahal is by the Shatabdi Express train.

Booked your holiday? Protect it from the moment you buy.

Other destinations

Shimla

Set in the foothills of the Himalayas, Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh, a state in northern India.

It is probably the most famous of the British hill stations and became known as the summer capital of British India. Today, the famous main street,

The Mall, is still lined with stately English-style buildings and is full of echoes of its past. Traffic is banned from the central part of town.

One of the best ways to travel to Shimla is the ‘toy train’ service that operates from Kalka, on a leisurely journey that takes several hours through heavenly scenery.

Kerala

If you want to get away from it all, Kerala is a coastal state in India’s deep south that enjoys some 370 miles of coastline and glorious beaches and is a lush patchwork of paddy fields and tea plantations.

Kerala is known for its famous meandering backwaters set against a backdrop of the spice and tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats.

It’s a great way to enjoy a gentle introduction to India, where travellers can enjoy Ayurvedic treatments and delicately spiced cuisine.

Look out for wild elephants and exotics birds, and sail through the labyrinth of rivers and canals on an elegant houseboat.

Mumbai

Formerly known as Bombay, the city was built largely by the British around one of the best-protected natural harbours in the world.

Home now to the Bollywood film industry and regarded as India’s economic centre, it is a city of contradictions where some of Asia’s biggest slums sit within spitting distance of some of the most expensive homes in the world.

Glimpses of the past can be seen in the grandest colonial-era architecture, but there are also bazaars, hidden temples and the best of India’s restaurants and nightlife, for those who can take the pace.

Goa

The famous stretch of stunning, palm tree-lined beaches, has made Goa a hot spot for travellers looking for a more laid back Indian experience.

But the state was once Portuguese and is rich in colonial history. Visit some beautiful plazas, churches and cathedrals in the state capital of Panaji.

Other points of interest include the old, luxurious estates including Braganza House, a magnificent old mansion.

Darjeeling

Another hill-station, Darjeeling sits at an altitude of around 2,100 metres, with a spectacular backdrop of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks and is awash it verdant tea plantations.

It’s a good place to head to get away from the oppressive heat if you visit India in the summer.

Look out for some stunning Buddhist monasteries, colourful markets, a number of faded relics from the Raj and, if you enjoy trekking, the surrounding areas all offer respite from city life.

Udaipur

This charming lakeside city, set beside the backdrop of Lake Pichola, is popular with tourists keen to see where the huge hits, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and its sequel were filmed.

The glorious ochre and purple ridges of the Aravilli Hills can be seen stretching out away from the city centre, and there are stunning palaces and monuments to enjoy too.

When you’ve taken your fill of the ancient bazaars and lively arts scene, take a tranquil boat ride on the lake and soak up the matchless setting that is Udaipur.

Varanasi

Famous for its Hindu temples, thousands flock here in pilgrimage to bathe in the Ganges.

The city is full of colour and while most visitors say it is without doubt a magical place, it is also extremely busy and you may feel overwhelmed as people flock to steps down to the river (known as ghats) to wash away their sins in the holy waters or to cremate their loved ones.

You’ll see yogis practice and priests perform rituals using flaming lamps. It’s easy to get lost in the labyrinth of alleys, known as galis, which are too narrow for traffic.

Just like the trends in clothing changes, so does the trends in hairstyles. During the latest years most guys have been wearing slim fit shirts and skinny jeans accompanied by tight and sharp hairstyles.

With sharp hairstyles we’re of course referring to the undercut and other military inspired scrapes with very short hair on the sides. Besides that we also had the topknot and man bun for those with longer hair.

But now it’s time to LOOSEN UP and search for a softer look like the FRINGE CUT, the MIDDLE PARTING, the MESSY BEDHEAD HAIR, the CAESAR CUT or more COLORFUL DYE EXPERIMENTS.

Are you guys ready to examine the different hairstyle trends for men in 2017? Well, let’s help you through them and prepare you for the new year!

image: https://www.slikhaarshop.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/starter.jpd_.jpg

Fringe Cut

Fringe cut, bangs, face curtains or man fringe – you better get used to the various expressions. In 2017 more and more of your friends will probably convert to the fringe cut. Perhaps you will escort your own bangs downwards as well?

The fringe cut comes in different appearances. You can cut and style it according to numerous aspects: 1) short, medium or long2) high or flat to the forehead3) glossy or matte4) messy, curly, rounded or sharp in terms of shape or 5) side-swept or straight.

But each man’s fringe will also differ in itself from the next one, depending on the density, texture, color and natural fall of your own hair.

If you have defined cheekbones the fringe will balance out your overall face. If you have receding hairlines, it’ll add that coverage you’ve always yearned for.

So go ahead and experiment with your fringe!

Middle Parting

We’ve seen lots of side partings in 2016. BUT the side parting will now crawl towards the middle of the forehead and become a middle parting.

If you have been rocking a man bun lately, the MIDDLE PARTING would be a safe next-level-choice if you don’t feel ready to go completely short. Fortunately, the middle parting typically still requires semi long hair.

Most partings wont centralize completely on your head, however. Instead they’ll line up dislocated 1-3 cm to the left or right of the absolute centre. And the very parting line wont make it’s way towards the top back like a dead straight highway as we saw on Nick Carter back in the 90s.

On most 2017 middle partings the line will reach more roughly for the top back. The hair straws will blend and create a more faded and subtle parting line.

We need to point out that the middle parting requires a little longer hair on the sides – at least if you prefer not to look like Kim Jong Un and his military inspired skin fade middle parting.

Messy Bedhead Hair

The MESSY BEDHEAD HAIR gives you a great look that says: “Wh… what? Nah, I didn’t style my hair this morning, I just woke up like this…” – even though you didn’t, you sly fox.

Overall, the new hairstyle trends of 2017 will still require hair wax and/or pre-styling spray. The main idea with the products, however, will be to add texture and volume rather than noticeable full control. You’re going for the messy look.

Don’t get us wrong – we’ll still style (and control) our hair, but the aim will be to create the illusion of not having spent too much time manipulating our hair.

Don’t take this as an insult, because I don’t intend it to be. Most smartwatches available today just weren’t designed to accommodate unisex sizes, nor are they appealing to women or those with feminine tastes.

Just take a look at some of the watches on store shelves and you’ll see how bulky, and unattractive they can be.

Our own Lawrence Bradford discussed the struggles she had while trying to find a smartwatch.

Frankly, a woman’s wrist is often smaller and her tastes are much different than that of a man’s; certainly one so invested in the tech market.

The good news is that issue is starting to dissipate, slowly but surely. No one has come up with a viable design for women just yet, but manufacturers have been much better at creating unisex style devices.

The Best Smartwatches for Women: Updated for 2018

There are some unisex watches that are acceptable.

The Moto 360, for example, while still relatively bulky looks sleek and stylish. The real allure is that you can choose from a dozen wrist straps to match your tastes. If you don’t see something you like on the Motorola website, there’s no need to fret. It uses a standard size band measurement so you can swap the stock band out for almost any strap of your choosing.

This is great not just in terms of style, but also when it comes to comfort. You may not like the band that comes with the watch, but you can easily install one that feels better on your wrist. In that sense, the Moto 360 is much more accommodating than some of the other smartwatches on the market. Which explains why Motorola followed up the original with several updated models.

That said, it’s not the only accommodating watch out there, there are many others. We’re going to take a look at some of the other models you might want to consider if you’re in the market for a smartwatch.

Apple Watch Series 3

Apple Watch Series 2 designsIf you own an iPhone and love all things Apple, then the Apple Watch is your best bet. There’s always the OG model and Series 2 which are cheaper, and since Apple now bundles the older models with the updated processor you won’t be missing out if you stick with their first smartwatch.

If you do spring for the Apple Watch Series 3, you’ll get access to several improvements including waterproofing, built-in GPS, and cellular connectivity. Yes, you can connect to a mobile network without your iPhone nearby.

There are so many styles to choose from it’s ridiculous actually. You should be able to find something suitable to your preferences, female or not.

There are two sizes – 38mm and 42mm – with the only difference being the smaller model is, well, smaller and so it has a slightly smaller battery.

Misfit Phase

Misfit Phase smartwatchMisfit is generally known for their fitness trackers, not smartwatches. That’s okay, because they picked a good time to jump into the smartwatch market.

Their first entry is the Phase, a stunning yet minimal-style watch for women. It has an analog face, and notification support. When a notification comes in – for calls, texts, social, and more – the watch will vibrate and a small window will change color. The color change indicates what notification or alert is coming in.

The Phase will also track fitness and health stats like sleep, steps, and total distance.

It’s priced reasonably at $175.

Fossil Q Accomplice

Fossil’s devices have always been minimal yet stylish and things are no different with the latest series. The female-friendly version is meant for smaller wrists, lighter in form and weight and incredibly comfortable to wear. Plus, it looks nothing like a smartwatch.

Features include activity and sleep tracking, vibration alerts and notifications, remote access buttons (selfies, music playback, more). Finally, it comes in several styles, colors, and with varying bands.

Asus ZenWatch 3

Asus ZenWatch 3 for womenThe Asus ZenWatch line has always been attractive, it’s nice to see the company finally dipping into a more rounded style. As the company’s other smartwatches, the ZenWatch 3 is powered by Android Wear.

Prices start at $229, which is considerably cheaper than most which seem to hover closer to the $300 mark.

The exterior is made with “jewelry-grade” 316 stainless steel and it has a diamond-cut bezel. There are a variety of straps to choose from too including genuine Italian leather.

It measures less than 10mm for thickness, while the screen is 1.39-inches. To compare it to other specs, that’s relatively thin. It’s still not the sweet spot, as it might feel thick on smaller wrists, but we’re getting there.

It comes in three colors: rose gold, silver, and gunmetal. Although, the two former would be more suited for women.

Also, it’s IP67 water resistant, which is always a plus.

LG Watch Style

LG Watch Style trioThe LG Watch Style is the company’s latest smartwatch. It’s round and powered by Android Wear.

It’s lightweight and relatively thin too at 10.8mm thick.

Not much else to say about this one, other than detailing the styles you can choose from which include rose gold, titanium, and silver.

This is typically characterized by consistent afternoon showers that may lead to major flooding in certain areas. Some islands and boat services shut down due to stormy weather during this time and you may need to be more flexible with travel plans and excursions. Those traveling to the beaches during these months may want to consider north and gulf coast options, particularly during September and October, as they tend to have less severe weather as the west coast region.

The shoulder season for tourism runs from April to June and is markedly hotter and drier. The beaches during this time of year tend to be less crowded as typically only the ocean breezes provide cooling.

High season for travel is November through March. This is characterized by cooler, drier weather after the monsoon season. The landscape is lush and temperatures are very comfortable during these months. Tourist crowds tend to increase during these times, particularly over the holidays in late December and early January.

Thailand Trip Highlights

In the heart of Southeast Asia, Thailand is home to distinct cultures and unique opportunities to get to know the local traditions, flavors, and customs, by exploring sites such as:

  • Bangkok – The capital of Thailand offers an engaging mix of markets, authentic Thai restaurants, museums, temples, and the Grand Palace, all on the backdrop of its buzzing city streets.
  • Grand Palace – The most important landmark in the country, the Palace served as the official home of the King of Siam (now Thailand) for more than a century and is still used for important political events in the country.
  • Chiang Mai – Become immersed in the country’s rich lore and legends through the ancient architecture, markets, and ceremonies that you will see performed here.
  • Phuket Island – This tropical island combines history with active travel, giving you opportunities to bike, visit local markets, tour Old Phuket, or swim in the gentle waters.
  • Phang Nga Bay – Enjoy the gentle breeze of paradise on this idyllic beach as you snorkel, sail, and stroll around this tranquil bay.
  • Elephant Nature Park – Get up close and personal with elephants that have been rescued or have retired from work for humans as you get a chance to feed them and even learn how to bathe them if you want.
  • Country Markets – Take a little piece of Thailand home with you from these traditional markets, some of which actually float on the lakes and are accessible by boat.

Thai Culture

Buddhism in Thailand has also become integrated with folk religion, or practices and superstitions that Thais have added to the original doctrine. For example, it is strongly influenced by traditions regarding ancestral and natural spirits. Thai families often build a small house to hold these spirits. As you travel throughout Thailand, you will see these located directly outside a home’s main entrance. Food and drink offerings are left in the spirit houses on a regular basis to keep them content. It is believed if they are not kept happy, then the household will experience chaos.

Buddhism in Thailand is also influenced by Chinese religions and influence due to the large Thai-Chinese population. Some Chinese have “converted” to Thai-style Theravada Buddhism. However, many still maintain separate temples of the East Asian Mahayana tradition.

Temples, or wats, are a definitive part of any trip to Thailand.  The white structures with tall, golden stupas are literally everywhere you go in this country!  As you approach the temples, you are sure to smell the fragrance of incense, exchange smiles with a golden-robed monk, and appreciate the detailed architectural design.  Choosing a just few temples to visit is a great idea as it can get exhausting if you try to see too many of them during your trip.

Upon entering a temple, there is an immediate sense of calm and reverence that should be respected.  Visitors should always dress appropriately – both men and women should not wear tank tops or shorts that do not cover their knees.  Shoes should be removed before entering, as well.  You should stay out of the way of worshipers, back away from the Buddha rather than turning your back, and never point your feet at a Buddha statue.  All visitors should avoid touching objects in the temple, and women should never touch a monk.  Even accidentally brushing against a monk’s robe requires him to go through a lengthy “cleansing” ceremony.

Admission is not required, but travelers can definitely choose to help support the monks with a monetary donation if you so choose.  Donation boxes are typically outside of the temple door.  Consider that visiting a temple is free, but it is truly a unique experience that gives you a glimpse of Thai culture, tradition, and history.
